Fender Japan are not the only fine
guitars to come out of the Far East - far from it. Some of the makes you may
not have heard of, but Yamaha you will certainly know. This is an
example of the sort of quality that had the major US manufacturers
extremely worried: Yamaha's SA1100 - a
clone of the Gibson ES335. Here are the specs:

| The first thing to say
straight away, is that this is the only guitar I have that was not
made in Japan. It was made in Taiwan... and I doubt you would
realise if it didn't have 'Made in Taiwan' on the back of the
headstock. Build quality is superb. I've had several Japanese
SA700s and SA1000s and, apart from the contemporary volume and
tone knobs, this instrument feels and sounds just like the
others.
This model was
made between 1988 and 1991 and the serial dates it at 1990.
Condition is superb. There are a couple of dings on the headstock
and small scratch in the bottom cutaway, but nothing else
photographable. There is very
little fret wear, and the tuners are smooth and positive. All controls work smoothly and
without noise. The action is low and very
comfortable.
From a translation of the Yamaha
website it is unclear to me which bits of the body are made of
which wood! Of
course, just as with the ES355, there is a hefty lump of wood
inside the body to give extra sustain... hence the weight which,
at around 4kg, is heavier than a Strat.

| If you are a regular visitor to this site you may have seen
me rave about Yamaha guitars - and the SA-series in particular -
before. In fact, the first Yamaha I ever had - an acoustic - was
made in Taiwan and quite excellent. I should never have sold it. Yamaha guitars are just beautifully constructed and
something of a well-kept secret over here.
Played acoustically, sustain is
good and you can feel the notes trough the body. Plugged
in, its just wonderful... good sustain, obviously, full and
rounded on the neck pup, and with plenty of top without ever being
harsh on the bridge pup. Drive it and the sound just get heavier
without ever get muddy... the tone remains well-defined and always
retains that 'woody' sound inherent in well-constructed semis.. Fabulous
and very versatile.
This comes highly recommended. And
if you want more good news, the fact is that, being from Taiwan,
means the price is considerably less than the Japanese models,
despite having cost the same or more when new! And it knocks spots
off Epi's and other 335 clones.
Sorry, no case for this one, but it
will be incredibly well-packed.
