Apart from a handful of models (which are
unique to Japan and therefore would not interfere with sales of US or
Mexican models) Fender Japan are prevented from officially exporting to
Europe or the US. What is made in Japan stays in Japan. This is what you
are missing out on....a hybrid Telecaster in the Keith Richard style. These are the specs:

| Condition |
| This is a 1988-89 Made
in
Japan 'H' serial. It is in good condition, but there are
a sprinkling of small dings and imperfections which I have
attempted to photograph. Click on
the thumbnails above for close-ups. It is all minor stuff as you
will see. There was a little wear in the fret board lacquer at the
second which allowed some dirt to penetrate. The spot has been
cleaned and re-lacquered.
The model designation of this is
TL67-65SPCL. Clearly there have been some modifications made,
notably that the pots, 3-way and capacitors have all been
upgraded. That is very common and quite sensible. I've never
seen this configuration of Fender Japan Tele with a white pick
guard... only black, to imitate Keith Richards' Teles. No extra
holes have been drilled but the white guard might not be original.
Equally, although current model hybrid 'Keef-style' Teles come
with chrome bridges, older guitars usually come with (extremely oxidized!)
brass bridges. I suspect the chrome bridge on this guitar is not
original. Just one more oddity... the 'Keef' Teles come with Gotoh
tuners... as does this one... but in this case they are of the
locking type. I have not been able to check the exact specs of
this model back in the late 'eighties but I'm suspecting that the
pick guard, bridge and tuners have all been changed/upgraded; the
electrics certainly have.
I generally avoided modded guitars
but in this the suspected mods are all sensible.

This instrument is in the style of one
of Keith Richard's stage guitars with his trademark modifications...changing the neck pickup for a
humbucker, replacing the original three-saddle bridge with a
six-saddle type, and swapping the tuners for modern
equivalents... oh, and the Strat-style 3-way switch tip. The
dense, ash body is nicely grained and heavy as Teles go... the
guitar weighs approx 3.8kg
Played acoustically, sustain is good, with a well
defined tone. Plugged in, it's quite well-mannered until you drive
it a little... it'll then rock like crazy and, of course, you've a
choice between the full, rounded, humbucker sound or the thinner
bridge single coil... or a mixture of both. Very nice indeed.
A new set of 10s has been fitted and
the action is very comfortable and easy right
up the neck. This guitar rocks, and the few cosmetic imperfections
are reflected in the price.
