Apart from a handful of models (which are
unique to Japan and therefore would not interfere with sales of US or
Mexican models) Fender Japan are now prevented from officially exporting to
Europe or the US. What is made in Japan stays in Japan. This is a '70 Reissue Telecaster Thinline. These are the specs:

| This is 1997-1998 'A' serial.
When Fender Japan changed from marking their instruments 'Made in
Japan' to 'Crafted in Japan' it clearly wasn't overnight and they
didn't throw 'old' components away... which is why anomalies
arise. This instrument has the 'A' serial bridge plate introduced
97/98, but a 'Made in Japan' transfer on the back of the neck.
I've had other instruments with similar theoretical mismatches and
it is far from unique during the transition period.
The guitar is in very good condition, but
there are a couple of minor imperfections and some minor buckle
rash, which you can see (just!) in
the above pics. The marks are hard to see because, as ever, a natural wood finish helps camouflage any imperfections
but, in all honesty, this guitar, with its lovely mahogany body,
looks stunning. There are years of life in the frets and all controls work smoothly and without noise.
A new set of 9s has been fitted and the action is clean and
comfortable all the way up the neck.
Everything is factory spec -
nothing having been modified.

| This Tele doesn't only
look good, it sounds good too. Although it qualifies as a
semi-acoustic, it is only the 'wings' of the body that are hollow. The
centre section is solid - apart from the pickup routing of course.
Acoustic
sustain and tonal definition are excellent. Plug it in and the
sound is more 'well-mannered' than, for instance, an ash-bodied
'52. The pickups are what Fender Japan term 'current' .. ie , they
are not trying to replicate the vicious snap and snarl of a
vintage Tele; they are after a more contemporary sound. Having
said that, drive it a little and this guitar will rock with the
best. But whether you are rocking, country picking, or just
looking for a clean, ringing sound... this Tele delivers and -
because it is a semi, always with a slightly 'woody' overtones.
This is a very nice instrument indeed, and versatile too.
I confess to being quite taken by
the looks and - more important perhaps - the sound of this Tele. This is a very attractive looking
and great sounding guitar. Note, this guitar comes with a nice
hardcase.
