Apart from a handful of models (which are
unique to Japan and therefore would not interfere with sales of US or
Mexican models) Fender Japan are prevented from officially exporting to
Europe or the US. What is made in Japan stays in Japan. This is one... a
rare '65 Reissue. These are the specs:

| This is an 2005-6 Crafted
in Japan 'R' serial. It is
in superb condition. If you look very carefully you can just see a
small mark near the jack socket. Click on the above thumbnails for
closeups. There is almost no wear in the frets and all
controls work smoothly and without noise.
Fender Japan occasionally produce
limited runs of odd models or finishes. This is one... a '65
Reissue with a bound neck. What makes it a 65 Reissue? Well, the
'transition' logo and the fretboard basically. Previous models had
a 'slab' of rosewood, flat on the bottom where it was glued to the
flat-topped maple neck blank. From about '65 the maple neck blank
was curved on the top and a slightly thinner rosewood fretboard,
curved on the bottom, was glued to it rather like a veneer would
be. I'm not explaining this very well but it meant that less
rosewood, an expensive wood even in '65, was used in the process
without sacrificing sound or playability. Compare pics of the 65's
headstock with that of a 62 and you'll see the difference.
Anyway, this reissue also has a
bound neck, which wasn't the norm back in 65 but seems to have
been a custom option then (pics exist of bound-neck 60s Strats) .
It looks rather nice doesn't it?

Comments |
| The acoustic properties
of alder impart a lovely tone and resonance and this guitar has
bags of sustain. Plug in and all the same qualities are evident.
The US-made Texas Specials really deliver whether you're playing clean or
dirty and at low or high volume.
A new set of hybrid 9s has been
fitted and it plays cleanly right up the neck.
What we have here is a rare guitar
- I've only handled one before - which isn't produced now and was
only ever produced for a short period. The anoraks among us can
relish pointing out the differences between it and a
common-or-garden '62, but the real point is... what's it play
like? Bloody marvelous actually. Feels great, sounds
great.
Classic good looks, superb sound
and condition... a beauty and, if was a collector not a dealer, I
wouldn't be selling it. No way.
