Normally I specialise in non-export
instrument, but I couldn't resist this... a made for export Hank Marvin
Signature Strat. Only 1500 were supplied at the request of UK and
European distributors back in 1991/2 I believe. Hank endorsed them and I
understand the idea was to market a quality instrument at a good price
and to encourage more people to take up the guitar. These are the specs:

If you are interested in this then
you'll know exactly what it is... something of an icon in Japanese
Fender terms. It says Squier on the headstock but should not be
confused with the Squiers produced in China and elsewhere... this
is quality, the same quality that Fender Japan were and are famous
for. Although these were imported in 1991/92 (if my
information is correct) this one carries a Made in Japan
'G' serial on the headstock that theoretically relates to the late
80s. These serials/dates are approximate and clearly the guitars
were assembled from stock in hand. It is absolutely genuine and,
apart from the tremolo arm, absolutely original.
There are a few small dings; I've
photographed those worth a mention, so click on the thumbnails
above for close-up pics. The saddles/bridge also show signs of
corrosion, but I've stripped it all down and cleaned and WD40'd
all the components so everything works perfectly and smoothly. The maple neck is a nice mellow
honey-colour, and there is plenty of life left in the frets. The
hardcase is of the same early 90s period as the guitar and
although the plating on the catches has gone and the outside a bit
scuffed, the interior is excellent. It is a very sturdy job.

| Played acoustically
this instrument has plenty of resonance and sustain with a nice
tonal quality. However, I'm not a lover of the pickups they used;
the neck and middle are ok but the bridge sounds harsh to me.
However, positions 2 and 4 are particularly
effective if you like that out of phase, early Mark Knopfler
sound. Having said all that, the rest of my Fender stock is loaded
with US Vintage or Texas Special pups, and its unfair to compare
the pups they used in the Squier with those.
One thing far more important than
the pups that they did not skimp on was the build quality. This
guitar feels just the same as all the Premium model Fender Japan
Strats I have... it is a pleasure to play now I've put a new set
of 9-46 hybrids on and tweaked the relief.
There is tons of life left in the
frets and all controls work smoothly and without noise. By the
way, Google 'Hank Marvin' and 'Squier' and you'll find people
raving about this guitar... some even like the pups. I don't, but
it's a great player.
Something else to bear in mind
apart from the fact that it's a really nice instrument... only
1500 were made and anything associated with Hank Marvin is in
demand. That's a recipe for increasing values.
