Fender Japan are far from being the only
company producing superb guitars. Here is an example of exactly the sort
of quality instrument that had the US manufacturers extremely worried: a Greco
Ace Frehley (Kiss) Les Paul Custom copy.

This Greco was made in 1978, although
you would never know it. The condition is superb. It
is an EG600 and cost
Yen 60,000, which was a fair of money back then!.
It really is in superb condition,
with just a couple of really minor blemishes. Check the above photos. The
top is centre-joined flame maple and the back is one-piece... I
think maple again. The bulk of the body 'filling' is mahogany with a
fillet of lighter-coloured wood for edge decoration. The guitar
weighs in at a very Les Paul-like 4.5kg or thereabouts. Hardware is in very good
condition with only minor pitting..
Fret wear is minimal - this instrument has clearly had
an easy life! The Greco 'tulip-style' tuners work smoothly and positively
as do all other controls. The electrics appear to be absolutely
original.
Acoustically, there
is tons of sustain with well-defined tones. Plug it in, and it is
absolutely superb! I don't know much about Greco pups but, by God,
this thing is awesome. If you want a good clean tone, you've got it,
but if you want to frighten the neighbours and make them think you
splashed out a couple of grand on the real things... just crank it
up. Fantastic!!
Oh, and the action is great too!

| I was never a Kiss fan
(they were very big in Japan), but you don't need to be to
appreciate this instrument. It looks great, plays beautifully, and
sounds awesome.
Japanese 'copy guitars'
are becoming extremely collectable. Indeed, some are
attracting very high prices. I believe - and I'm not alone - that
prices of almost all models from the well-known Japanese 'copy'
manufacturers can only continue to climb.
Forget the current crop of LP
copies from Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, China etc... this Japanese
instrument will out- play them all... and it will retain its value.
