I occasionally like to
import something a little different from Japan, and Fender Japan
are far from being the only company there producing superb
guitars. Here is an interesting example, a 1981 Greco SA550,
their take on the Gibson ES335 theme.
This is were I normally put the 'tech spec' box... but the
thing about importing slightly unusual instruments is that
technical specifications are hard to come by. As you can see
in the pic looking through the 'f' hole, this guitar was
made in the famous Fujigengakki factory where, apart from
Grecos, they also manufactured Ibanez guitars and, a few
years later, started to churn out Fender Japan instruments.
Build quality is a given.
The neck is mahogany, and the fret board is obviously
rosewood. I don't know what the body is made out of.
This instrument has the
patina of age... and why not, it's 29 years old. Hardware
plating is pitted, there is a sprinkling of very minor dings
and there is a some crazing of the finish. It is all very
minor cosmetic stuff, but it gives the instrument the look
of a vintage guitar - which it is. However, everything works
perfectly. The 'tulip-style' tuners are smooth and positive,
and the intonation adjustment screws in the bridge work
perfectly. All controls perform smoothly and without
crackle, and there are years of life in the
frets.
At some stage, one of the
volume knobs has been replaced by a tone knob and the pick
guard has gone missing. On the plus side, the previous owner
replaced the standard U-1000 pickups with a pair of PU-2s,
which Greco fitted into the more expensive SA800 and SA900
models.
This comes with a padded
gigbag (not original)

So, the really important question... what's it like?
You'll guess that the thinline body has a solid central block like the
Gibson ES335, so it performs much better plugged in
acoustically, but you get a response midway between the two
in my opinion. There is a definite 'woodiness' to the tone
that you just don't get from a solid-body, but you still get
solid-body sustain.
Just like with the Yamaha
SA700, their equivalent, the neck pup is full and rounded
and there is plenty of top without ever being harsh on the
bridge pup. Drive it and the sound just get heavier without
ever get muddy... the tone remains well-defined. Fabulous
and very versatile. Yes, I've used the same phrases when
describing the Yamaha, but the two instruments are very
similar in they way they respond. And before anyone asks
'which is best?' ... there is no best; for me the choice
would come down to which I liked the look of more. They both
perform beautifully, sound awesome and are a pleasure to
play.
Yes, I like this guitar! |
